A Summer That Feels Unusual
During the first days of January, several regions of Argentina recorded cool weather, with temperatures well below what is typical for this time of year. In areas where highs usually exceed 30 degrees Celsius, minimum temperatures dropped to around 10 or 12 degrees.
Out-of-Season Polar Air
The main cause is the arrival of cold air masses from the southern part of the continent. These polar air intrusions, more common in autumn or winter, pushed unusually far north and replaced the typical summer heat.
Disrupted Atmospheric Currents
Meteorologists point to a highly distorted jet stream, the high-altitude wind system that separates cold and warm air. Its irregular behavior allows cold air to advance at unexpected times, leading to sudden temperature changes.
Climate Change in the Background
While it may seem contradictory, global warming does not mean constant heat. Experts agree it leads to greater climate instability, with more frequent extremes, including intense heat waves and unusual cold spells.
What Lies Ahead
Forecasts suggest that warmer temperatures will return, but not consistently. The 2026 summer may be marked by alternating warm periods and renewed cold air incursions, making the season less predictable than in the past.
