One question keeps coming up in forums, group chats and YouTube comments since both phones launched: iPhone 17 Pro Max or Samsung S26 Ultra? Both cost over a thousand dollars, both have top-tier specs and both will last several years with software support. The difference isn't about which one is "better" in the abstract — it's about what you use your phone for and which ecosystem you live in.

This comparison won't declare a universal winner because there isn't one. But it will tell you, category by category, which phone does each thing better and which user profile each one suits.

Design and build

The iPhone 17 Pro Max brought an important material change: it dropped the titanium of the 16 Pro Max and returned to aluminum — but not just any aluminum. It's a hot-forged aluminum unibody structure that Apple describes as lighter and with better thermal conductivity than titanium. The 6.9-inch phone features Ceramic Shield 2 on the front with three times greater scratch resistance than the previous generation, and the back is also Ceramic Shield with four times greater impact resistance. IP68 rated.

The Samsung S26 Ultra also returned to aluminum after two titanium generations, resulting in around 214 grams and 7.9 mm thickness — the slimmest Ultra to date. It features Gorilla Armor 2, IP68 certification and an integrated slot for the S Pen — still the most important design differentiator of the Ultra line compared to any other flagship on the market.

Design verdict: technical tie on materials and durability. The Samsung S26 Ultra wins on functionality thanks to the integrated S Pen. The iPhone wins on perceived premium finish.

Display

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion up to 120 Hz, more brightness and less glare than the previous generation. It's the best display Apple has ever put on an iPhone.

The Samsung S26 Ultra has a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X at QHD+ resolution (3,120 × 1,440 pixels) and the Privacy Display feature: using the OLED panel's pixel matrix, it makes the screen only visible from directly in front when activated — ideal for public transport or crowded spaces. It's the first time this technology has appeared on a mainstream consumer smartphone.

Display verdict: the Samsung S26 Ultra has higher resolution and the most useful display innovation of the year. The iPhone has the best color calibration on the market. If you spend a lot of time on public transport, Samsung's Privacy Display is a real argument.

Processor

The iPhone 17 Pro Max carries Apple's A19 Pro chip, built on a 3nm process by TSMC. It has 12 GB of RAM and comes in up to 2 TB of storage. In single-core performance — the type of task where iOS excels — the A19 Pro has no rival in the Android market. The vapor chamber integrated into the unibody structure allows up to 40% better sustained performance under load compared to the previous generation.

The Samsung S26 Ultra runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 from Qualcomm, also on 3nm. It's the most powerful Android processor on the market, with substantial improvements in graphics performance and AI capabilities over the Gen 4.

Processor verdict: the A19 Pro wins on energy efficiency and single-core performance. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the Android king in raw performance and graphics. In everyday use, the difference is imperceptible for most people.

Camera

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a three-camera system, all 48 MP: main Fusion camera (24mm, f/1.78), Fusion Ultra Wide (13mm, f/2.2) and telephoto (100mm, f/2.8) with 4x optical zoom plus 8x optical-quality zoom — the most zoom ever on an iPhone. The Center Stage front camera moves up to 18 MP with autofocus. Records 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps with the main camera. ProRes and ProRAW remain Apple exclusives in this segment.

The Samsung S26 Ultra has the most ambitious camera system on paper: 200 MP main camera with a wider aperture than the S25 Ultra, capturing 47% more light. Records 8K at 30 fps with the new APV (Advanced Professional Video) codec, comparable to ProRes but royalty-free. Photo Assist with Galaxy AI can now add elements to photos in addition to removing them.

Camera verdict: the iPhone wins on consistency, natural rendering and photographic software. The Samsung S26 Ultra wins on maximum resolution, versatility and 8K professional video. For everyday use the iPhone is easier. For professional production Samsung has more tools.

Battery

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a battery of nearly 4,832 mAh (NanoSIM version) or 5,088 mAh (eSIM-only version). Apple claims up to 39 hours of video playback — the highest battery figure in iPhone history. 40W fast charging by cable (50% in 20 minutes) and 25W MagSafe wireless.

The Samsung S26 Ultra has 5,000 mAh with 60W fast charging by cable — the first time the Ultra line has exceeded 45W — and 15W wireless charging.

Battery verdict: the Samsung S26 Ultra has higher capacity and charges faster by cable. The iPhone compensates with the A19 Pro's energy efficiency, which makes its nearly 5,000 mAh last longer than the numbers suggest. In real-world daily battery life, they're very close.

Ecosystem and software

This is the most important difference and the one that should carry the most weight in your decision.

The iPhone lives inside the Apple ecosystem: AirDrop, AirPlay, Handoff, iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, AirPods. If you already own one or more of these devices, the iPhone 17 Pro Max integrates with all of them natively and frictionlessly. iOS 26 includes Apple Intelligence for on-device AI tasks with a privacy focus. Apple's software support runs a minimum of five to six years.

The Samsung S26 Ultra lives in the Android and Samsung ecosystem: Galaxy AI, PC integration via Link to Windows, Samsung DeX to use the phone as a desktop computer, the S Pen for advanced productivity, and Bixby with LLM capabilities for natural language control. Samsung commits to seven years of Android and security updates — the longest software support commitment in the Android industry.

Ecosystem verdict: if you already own Apple devices, the iPhone is the answer without thinking twice. If you live in Android or use Windows, the Samsung S26 Ultra offers integrations the iPhone cannot replicate.

Price

| Model | 256 GB | 512 GB | 1 TB |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | from $1,199 | from $1,399 | from $1,599 |
| Samsung S26 Ultra | from $1,299 | from $1,419 | from $1,659 |

The Samsung S26 Ultra is between $60 and $100 more expensive at each storage tier. The difference isn't decisive, but the iPhone starts cheaper.

Which one should you actually buy

Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max if:
- You already own a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch or AirPods
- You prioritize photographic consistency over maximum resolution
- You want the best single-core performance and energy efficiency
- You prefer iOS and the Apple ecosystem
- You want to shoot in ProRes or ProRAW

Buy the Samsung S26 Ultra if:
- You need the S Pen for notes, signatures or productivity
- You want Privacy Display for use in public spaces
- You want to record in 8K with APV or need the highest possible photo resolution
- You live in Android and use a Windows PC
- You want seven guaranteed years of updates

The honest answer: both are excellent and neither will disappoint you. The real decision is between iOS and Android, and between having an S Pen and not. Everything else is a matter of nuance.
